Youtube Fails Again

As I’m sure many have noticed by now, youtube has once again proven that they are more interested in screwing up how the site looks, trying to provide more and more eye candy on the various web pages, than they are in actually fixing things and improving overall site performance.

That’s right.. the home page, watch page, my videos page and more have all changed.

Honestly I could deal with the changes if not for one crucial mistake that they have made. They decided that it would be a great idea to use gray text on a light gray background. This only serves to make it more difficult to read the text.

I don’t know what their web designers are drinking but I’m pretty sure that it’s caustic enough that they have to use lengths of teflon hose instead of traditional straws. I say this because whatever it is has clearly managed to dissolve major sections of their brains. Particularly the portions responsible for having any sense at all, common or otherwise, when it comes to how to properly design a web page.

What they don’t seem to realize is that one of the key factors in a web page, even one that is intended primarily to deliver video content, is that it be easily readable. In order to achieve this the text color and background color should be a high contrast. By making the text and background colors so close it make the text much more difficult to read.

When you add to that people like myself whose vision isn’t as good as it was years ago that text can sometimes become all but unreadable.

This is a major problem when it comes to responding to comments . . . something that people who upload videos should do a lot of. It’s not easy to respond to something when you can’t read it due to stupid color choices like gray on gray.

Pull your head out youtube! Text is meant to be readable!

What I don’t understand is why they’d do that in the first place. Youtube is owned by Google, who has recognized extremely low contrast text to background color combinations as being a tactic used by scammers, spammers and anyone that is trying to game the search engines, putting text in a page that is next to impossible to read by humans, meant only for the search engines.

It’d be funny indeed if youtube took a serious ranking penalty from Google because of their piss poor color scheme choices.
