Giving in order to receive may not sound sensible to a lot of people but if you look around, you’ll see all manner of businesses doing just that. Giving their customers something and in return they’re getting more sales.
This isn’t something that some marketing guru came up with either. It’s actually a very old bit of advice that Jesus gave his followers.:
Luke 6:38, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
So you see, giving in order to receive isn’t exactly a new concept. It is however, a concept that many people have either ignored or forgotten.
If you give something to your potential customer, social conventions in most cultures will have them feeling like they need to give you something (like a sale) because they are compelled to return your generosity.
If, for example, you give them something like an ebook for completing a questionnaire or reading to the bottom of your copy or loading the checkout page on your site, you have given them one more reason to buy from you that’s over and above your product.
It’s also true that the more significant the gift you give them, the greater the obligation to give you something in return.
