What If Someone Really Did Fly The “Jolly Roger”?

This is the first in what I hope will be a long run of posts that pose various “what if” questions. This topic is intended to be a little bit thought provoking and a little bit funny and light hearted.

I’m starting off with something inspired while my wife and I were watching “Duel” the other night. One contestant was asked the traditional “What would you do with the money if you win?” question. His answer took the host and everyone else by surprise.

He said that he’d buy a pirate ship.

There was another minute or so of talk about it on the show and then they got back to the game but I don’t really remember it becasue I was too busy wondering about things. I wondered about this guy and how many wires might not be making a good connection. I also wondered, a little bit at first and then more as time went on, what if somebody really did hoist the Jolly Roger on a privately owned ocean going ship?

I mean, if you think about it, any pirate isn’t REALLY going to announce that’s what they are and that they’re on the way to kill you, steal your valuables and steal your ship. That’d be stupid. The way I see it, a real pirate would be friendly, do whatever they could to convince you to get close and allow them to board your ship. Once aboard they would case the situation, make sure they knew how many people there were and where everyone was. Only then would they break out the weapons and start pillaging.

So what would the US Coast Guard, or the Navy, do if they encountered a ship with the skull and crossbones flying? Me, I think they’d believe they’d found yet another rich guy with a boat, a fantasy and maybe a little bit more money than brains.
