Valued Trash

Billy has an odd habit. Instead of recycling his trash the way a lot of people do these days or even just putting it all in a trash can and setting it out to be picked up once a week like almost everybody does, he puts a large part of it in a pile in his back yard.

Not only that but he also spends quite a bit of time collecting other people’s trash and adding a good bit of it to the pile in his back yard.

Why does he do this? Does he like the smell of decaying garbage or what? Well, I found out recently that the reason he does it is because this is how he earns a living instead of a traditional 9 to 5 job. He calls himself a professional composter.

He started doing this about a couple of months ago and what started out as a simple pile in his yard has become a rather long line of stuff that snakes back and forth, filling his yard.

When he sells some of the compost he digs it out of one end of the pile and new stuff is added to the other end. He says it’s a slow business but a steady one that is continuing to grow. He’s even getting ready to buy the empty lot next to his and extend his ever growing compost line into it.

As for me, I’m just glad that he lives about six blocks away . . . downwind.
