I just found out that I have been missing out on some potential income from my YouTube channels.
You see, I’ve had this routine for a while where I upload a video and then when the upload is complete I use the “edit video” button on the “My Videos” page to edit some settings and set my preferences for the “advertising options” section.
When I did this I would enable pre-roll ads and disable the “standard instream” and allow the “trueview instream”. I choose to use the “trueview instream” ads because they allow the viewer the option of skipping the ad. I’ve found that if people have the option to skip they are more likely to actually watch the ad and maybe even click. This means I have the shot to earn more.
The problem is that I just found out that when youtube approves a video for revenue sharing those advertising settings are reset to their default of allowing adsense on the watch page and the in-video adsense overlay but NOT the pre and post rolls.
The key is to wait until the video is approved before setting those options. Apparently the best way to do this is to upload the video as private and when YouTube approves it they’ll automatically set it to public and publish it.
Once that happens (and it CAN take a while), THEN set the advertising options to enable the pre-roll ads (and if the video is long enough, post rolls as well).
So now I’m going to be going back over the videos I have uploaded on two channels and fix those settings. This means having to go through nearly 700 videos on one channel and almost 150 on the second channel. It’s going to take a lot of time but in the end it should be well worthwhile because I expect to see an increase in earnings because of it.
I wish I’d have known about this a year ago when I first became a partner! I don’t even want to think about how much money I have missed out on!
